Mr. President, I am a UK citizen and in common with the vast majority of people in the ‘free world’ I salute your election and have confidence in your ability to improve the quality of life for the millions, both in the US and overseas, who now look to you for guidance in so many spheres of their lives.
Your skills that will be directed to the governance of a nation are already manifest and I believe that the name of Barack Obama will be a beacon of hope for generations to come.
While the US is justifiably seen as a leader in many aspects of social reform, there is one area of legislation that diminishes its esteem across large swathes of the world. This is its retention of the Death Penalty. In this respect, the legal system is often shown to be flawed, and the end result has the bitter taint of vengeance rather than the sweet taste of justice.
I appeal to you in the name of humanity to end this barbaric practice and expunge the stain that still diminishes your great nation in the eyes of the world. It is impossible to reconcile legalised killing with Christian ethics.
I know that mine is a lone voice that will never reach your ear, but there will be others, and voices, like drops of water may in time gather together to form a torrent that can wash away presidents and kings.
Sincerely, Albert Oxford
